Items 1-5

Come back for items 6-10!

To celebrate the 160th anniversary of the School, Archives Assistant, Jemima Hegerty-Ward and Communications Manager, Bonnie Robinson, took a deep dive into the Archive to find some of their favourite items from over the School’s History. With thanks to Archivist Chris Nathan for his encyclopaedic knowledge of the Archive and his endless patience!

Part 1: Items 1-5

Item 1: Early speckled school boater, circa 1901-4.

These boaters were issued to all pupils at the school although very few survive as it was traditional to throw them in the river at the end of your last term.

Item 2: School crockery, sold in the Tuck Shop from 1930-1950.

Item 3: Wooden mallet used by Thomas Chamberlain to lay the first foundation stone at the School site in Summertown in 1870.

The same mallet was used by the Bishop of Oxford to lay the first stone for the Chapel in 1876.

Item 4: A hat band bow, circa 1910, woven in Rhubarb colours.

Item 5: Brass OSE blazer buttons dating from 1927.

This design was still in use in the 1970s.
